"an" goes before words starting with a vowel.

Well "an" is only supposed to be put before words beginning with a vowel, and commonly "an" is put before words beginning with the letter h because it makes a softer, vowel-like sound. To be honest, you can get away with doing both, but generally scholars would put the words "an" before "holistic".
