I think its a possibility, the problem is finding a suitable planet.

There is talk about transforming and colonizing Mars:

    http://library.thinkquest.org/C003763/index.php?page=mars03
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonization_of_Mars

I don’t think we could make a guess at when that would become a reality, but I don’t think I will see it happen in my lifetime.

    JAMMco... its complicated...

I would assume that the first planet would be the Moon, (does that qualify as a planet?) due to it's proximity to the Earth. With any new endeavor as a moon, proximity is important for communication and transportation until we are better able to perfect space travel.

My question is... how long will the colony maintain it's ties with it's mother nation before seeking independence (that is the premise of a book I'm writing and is copyrighted).

Human beings won't ever truly be interested in conquering new worlds, until we find peaceful sentient life that we can massacre and steal all their technology.

No one really knows what lies in outer space. stands to reason, that if humans are on just one planet in the vast solar system, that surely there is something else out there.

Until the correct scientific data from outer space is gathered, no one can put a time frame on your question.

    YES!

We might colonize first on both the Moon and Mars.

But perhaps the most impossible ones would be Titan (Saturn's atmouspheric Moon) and believe it or not...Venus!

Venus on the other is harsh, barran, and unable to sustain life on it what so ever.

But thanks to modern day technology,
we might one day terraform Venus into a sustainable planet (might take a few centuries to do so).

I'm not 100% sure if Venus might be sustainable one day. But it might be possible to reduce the atmouspheric pressure and build a gigantic dome somewhere for people to live in.

Titan on the other hand is too far, i'm talking 5 years to far. If we build one of the biggest space cruise lines in the world (Wall E for an example), than whop-dee-doo!! We would be on the way.

I imagine we will, it's just a matter of time. It's in our best interest to do that to prevent the loss of all humanity in the event of a single, catastrophic disaster here on earth. Mars seem the most likely planet to colonize first.

The humans that have been abducted from Earth are already colonizing and living quite successfully on the other side of the galaxy! So when this world is totally destroyed at least our genetic form will continue elsewhere!

If humanity ever colonizes any other planet, it certainly should NOT be Mars! Did you know that there may be microbes living on Mars that could KILL US ALL if we went there and brought the alien germs back to Earth with us to study, only to have them somehow ESCAPE? "War of the Worlds" could suddenly leap from the pages of literary science fiction and into stark reality, only this time, the tables would be turned and, instead of Earth germs killing the Martians, WE OURSELVES would fall prey...to MARTIAN germs! Think about it.

I truly hope that in my life time, us humans get to see what life means.

I hope Humanity is given a second chance on how to survive and live.

I hope we can go to the stars and far far away galaxies, It is in our blood to explore the unexplored.

None of the societies in place right now are up to the task. Only a semi-Militaristic state might be able to. One that has the resources , knowhow and funds of a capatist economic system. (Like the USA or European union) but also has the stomach to suffer the casulties and loss of life that would inevitably occur. ( like some 3rd world countries ran by dictators). Those qualities would have to be drivin by an ambition like it took to build the panama canal The french tried from 1881-1889. They failed and lost an estimated 22000 lives in the attempt. America Finally did it later but it still cost over 5000 lives and Western society today would not withstand such losses today.

Naw, at the accelerated rate we're destroying this one and killing each other, we'll go boom long before we can get into the scape pod
