Very happy. Finally the extremists have lost their grip on preventing progress and help for those with diseases. Mrs. Reagan is for it..many Republicans are for it. It is not a political thing..it is an extreme-religious-right "thing". Being self-righteous and sanctimonious only works among like-minded people who are closed off from the rest of the world. It doesn't play in Peoria. Good for Obama. It will be good for us. We are way behind the curve on this one thanks to "the decider" rolling over to Karl Rove's idea that kissing up to the religious right was more important than providing help to mankind. The rest of the world is far ahead of us in research. Shame on "the decider". He should have known better. Maybe he did know but didn't have the backbone to do what was right.
About time. W couldn't fold his hanky right.
It is about time that science and helping living people was given a priority over superstition and the beliefs of some people in some religions.
I am delighted to see science rather than politics driving this issue. The embryos that will be used in this research are from fertility clinics and are left over after a woman has conceived. If they are not used for research, they must be destroyed. So the idea that we are saving human lives by stopping this research is utter rubbish.
I commend President Obama’s effort on this subject.
Finally Obama is leading US out of the dark ages when it comes to medical research!
The President has done the right thing, as promised.
Yes, human life is precious;
but miscarriages and discarded human embryos
result from between 10 to 25% of
all clinically recognized US pregnancies.

Making the most of life's plentiful opportunities is what really matters.

If an unknown doctor on a radio talkshow at 3am says licking frogs will cure boredom, would you try it? Even once?

You're reading What are your thoughts on Obama allowing federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research?
Comments
I just read a news item reporting stemcell implants on degenrated retina have grown into fully functional retina optic nerve cells. There are millions of blind who have lost their optic nerves due to Glaucoma and Retinal Pigmentosis. Funding for stemcell research will certainly be welcomed by all those totally blind and near blind people the world over.
Same with those paralyzed below neck or hip due to spinal cord damage. +6.

Wow. That's terrific news. I have cataracts that are reaching the operable stage now. I'm hoping that at some point, stem cells will allow regeneration of healthy, focusable lenses in the eyes. The current operation gives good vision but with a fixed focal length.

The human trials are about to start. I am thinking of volunteering, Jim. I need a retina really bad.
What the article said was that totally damaged nerve cells got regenerated and became normal seeing optic nerve cells in 12 days!
Same procedure should work for eye lenses affected by cataract.
For your back problem too the solution may be here. Stemcell work the same way on any tissue.
I will keep you posted about further news on the topic.

Right, palmagna. Thanks, Suby. I look forward to hearing about it.

So far this thread hasn't been attacked because of our views, for which I am very grateful. Happy Monday to all of you! :) ((hugs))

Thats why I didn't address my first comment to you, Rosie. I thought it better to put down the facts from the news report. Your answer was excellent, by the way.

These are the areas where stemcell therapy could bring in a revolutionary change. People the world over need the relief that stemcell therapy can provide.

Thank you for the link my friend and the information. This whole area of research is a no-brainer except to a very loud, narrow segment of the population. Thank goodness we have emerged from the dark days of pandering to fringe elements and are now able to do what we should have been doing all along. Happy Tuesday, Suby! :) ((hugs)) Thank you for the compliment as well! :)

Rosie: I will keep posting links to whatever news on this field in this comments thread. I think it is a crime against humanity to let all those hundreds of tons of stem cells thrown into incinerators whereas there are people waiting for remedies to otherwise incurable conditions.
I search Google news for items of interest to me every morning. Do you think we will be inviting trouble by making this place a repository of links to stem cell research? We can always hope that more like minded people will join in. Please advise.

I don't think so although my answer just got DR'd -5 by someone..I expected as much. The hypocrites who say they value life are the same ones who support a needless war that has killed over 4000 of our kids. They talk but never say anything. I think there are more of us than there are of them..I think it's a great idea honey! :) ((hugs))
by RosieGHM Jetpacker on March 10th, 2009
Okay, Rosie. Seeing your answer first i had thught there would have been a lot more of DRs. I will save my links online myself. I feel in a short time people will change their minds when they see someone dear to them benefiting from the research. We will close this thread now and meet again at a similar question elsewhere in the AB.

It's a deal my friend. Happy Wednesday Suby! :) ((hugs))
