I don't know what Scott thought of "Aliens." Good question. " Alien " certainly is classic - - but I'm surprised a bit by your referring to " Aliens" as lacklustre. So many critics -- and audience members - - tended to think it was a great sequel and movie in its own right. To me, at least director Cameron was respectful of the original characters and didn't try to repeat " Alien." 'Aliens' is completely different in style. But I'm with you,Harry the Bastard - - the original " Alien" is so darn superlative!
