Depends on what you're doing it for? If you're learning just to learn then I guess it's not as important as if you wanted to become a music teacher right? But knowledge isn't ever useless even if you never use it...

I think it is. In so many ways learning what you are doing on an instrument will enhance every aspect of your creativity and ability. Give it a shot...just like GreeNja said...'knowledge isn't ever useless even if you never use it...' great quote!!!!
