Question

Help answer this question below.

My garage door opener (craftsman) starts acting up in the cold. (If it is very cold or the temperature drops quickly) Door bounces back up or never starts to go down. I have to hold down inside button until door fully closes. Any suggestions/ideas?

Garage doors have a "resistance setting" on them so that if there is enough resistance on the door it will stop and return to open position. A newer garage door has the electric eye close to the ground so that any obstruction will not allow the door to close and when in motion will return to the open position.
Have you checked the electric eye for spider webs, or even ice forming over the eye or receiver?
Another problem may be that it needs to have a maintenance checkup. Perhaps the chain and other moving parts need grease replaced. The door hinges also need to be greased regularly.

Another alternative would be to "unlock" the door and manually open and close it during cold weather, then "relock" it. This would be better than continually holding the button down and forcing the motor to run.

My Lift-Master just started doing the exact same thing- works when warm-will not when cold. Oiled everything-messed with the resistance settings did not help. Still a problem, have noticed a lot of people on the net have the same problem with no good answers.

I've searched for this as well. Best answer I found is halfway down this page (Cold Weather Affects Craftsman Garage Sensors):

I haven't tried it yet, but may venture it this week.
