I have two parrots and want to get a couple of rescue dogs. I want at all costs to avoid injury to my birds and suspect that some breeds of dog may be less reliable and react badly to a bird flying round the room. Your comments would be appreciated.

Would anyone be able to give me some idea on how to make some toys for parrots. My parrot is a 2 month old African Grey.

You're reading My African Gray gets bored with her toys easily .. I have spent waaay too much money on toys she ignores after a month or so.. is there a toy any parrot owner has bought or made that really kept their parrot's attention for a good period of time?

Most any book dealing with captive Psittacus and related species will mention this info.

I have read a couple books but she is a pretty smart cookie .. most things it said to try.. did not work with her. I was hoping to find a new idea.. or some handmade toy that has worked with others.

Bob's answer is pretty much what you need to do. I own a QP. If I don't swap those toys out on a monthly basis there's hell to pay. There are a lot of inexpensive things you can use around the house. Toilet paper tubes are great. They slide over perches, aren't harmful and because they are larger than a normal perch's diameter, provide extra stretching for the toes, keeping your bird limber. Blocks of untreated pine are fine too. Toss some of these at him from time to time and swap out your existing toys on a regular basis and you'll have a happier camper.

Ohh yeah, Trouble, my Quaker Parrot just walked over to remind me with his "bird bone". Rolled up tissue paper is fun too.

lol! If you could help me figure out why she absolutely will NOT allow her red tail feathers to grow in.. I would be in heaven.. she lets them grow out some.. just when I think she will let them stay.. GONE! No distress.. Vet says just her "thing" but there has to be a reason.. she is 14 yrs old and has never let them stay. grrrr

You can see one peeking out.. it will be gone before long.. she is sucha tomboy! she just plucks em out! http://tinyurl.com/2u23y2

If the bird isn't stressed , bored or have dietary issues, it will indeed be her "thing". Some pluckers never change.
Edit: I can't really see from the frontal pic, but the rest of the plumage looks fine, so yes..it's just a nasty habit.

I am too embarrassed to take a back picture lol it is bare but for a single red feather that she has not plucked yet. Anyhow.. that is what her vet said.. her thing.. so I am stuck with her naked butt! Thanks so much for your time and help. I am going to put a toilet paper roll on now. I switched her toys earlier but she is out of the cage right now.. Thanks again!!!
