Take the toys you have now and switch in a few every few weeks, always change them up, and they won't get bored...that is what we do. They will get bored with any toy after a while, so just keep them guessing, hope this helps.

My african grey wants paper bags.

Seriously. He will spend hours reducing brown paper to shreds. I asked my vet, and he said there is nothing on it that will hurt him, especially since he doesnt eat the paper, jsut rips it into shreds.

He is also amused by the dogs. He has started calling them, just to mess with their heads.

if he is bored with toys easily hang or stick a round mirror on the cage so that it can enjoy its reflection.....better not get a square or rectanglar mirror cause the parrot may get hurt by the sharp edges>>>>>>>>also parrots will talk to the mirror which is really cute to see and hear

I read in Bird Talk magazine that a large macaw loved to pick apart those cardboard egg containers. She hung it from the top of the cage bars. Also, you can try stringing non dyed paper strips, toilet paper, or paper towels through the cage bars. If you want more ideas, you can email me at ashleyjuliette22@hotmail.com.
I own three parrots and have been making their toys for a long while.

A month is actually kinda a long time for one toy. I rotate my birds toys out every week or two. that seems to keep her pretty entertained. of course, it is always important to remember to spend lots and lots of time with you bird. they are very sociable creatures and time spent with their owners is more valuable than any toy. hope that helps!

my grey loves when i put a roll of toilet paper through his perch. he loves to unravel it. it takes him abou a day and half to shred it, and he really seems to enjoy it. someone also suggested a natural hand whisk broom to shred, but mine is afraid of it so far.

I'd have to say the simplest toys are the best. Offhand, I'd group my bird's stuff into two categories: texture and destructive. Things that are fun to take apart are great, like tying pieces of cloth to the cage and those little plastic chains. And texture, things that have a neat texture will keep a bird busy forever and ever. Try things that can't be detroyed easily. My son recently donated a couple of MegaBlocks to the bird and it loves to try and pick them up and feel them with its tongue.
Baby toys are easy to get from a friend whose kiddo grew out of them and they make great bird toys too; they are both durable and interesting.

I used to rent a room from a woman who owned an African Gray. It never liked any of its toys, but it really enjoyed television (copied all the commercials) and it liked torturing the cat with sounds and calls. It could mess with the cat all day long.

My african grey loves rap music the faster the beat the better... he jumps up and down and headbangs... every 2-3 weeks we switch out everything, his perches, his toys, his food bowls... otherwise he will start plucking his feathers.

I agree MUSIC is a good tool too...my CAG, Emily loves Eric Clapton, The Beatles and she enjoys movies too...comedies best of all. She can watch a new flick with us, and SHE starts laughing a second before we do sometimes. If it's a mystery, scary type of movie, and someone dares to talk, especially at a suspenseful moment in the film...Emily says Shhhh, no, shhhhhh!

Be sure too that you are making time to spend time playing WITH your CAG. You can teach her tricks, her colors, or shapes and have her "get them" and bring them to you. Emily likes to play soccer..with us using a bright orange golf ball, and rolling it all over the living room...she'll roll it to us, and chase it too.

I dont know if you have already tried it but i find a mirror dangeling at each end of the cage keeps them happy, get one thats on a chain because when it swings they get teasy and hit it more and harder and its quite funny to watch.

Please use care with paper towel rolls as VIVA rolls contain (or have been blamed for) giving parrots lead poisoning. After testing, no lead had been found in the paper itself, but in the rolls.
Beyond that, the best toys seem to be the cheapest (or free) ones. Paper, paper and more paper in any format. Although some bird to company makes acrylic 'donuts' on chains that you can roll newspaper up and stuff it in the donut hole and hang in cage. Gret shred material. Also good for playing: the toy hanging clips or loops with a few beads on it, then locked so it works like a foot toy.
I have set my iPod up with a playlist called parrot songs. On that playlist I have lots of kid music (wheels on the bus, you are my sunshine, big bird singing and DAY-O the banana song). The parrots just love to dance and sing and listen to music. You can always try parrot videos on your computer when you aren't home. Good ones: The Wild Parrots of telegraph Hill, PBS's nature show: The Real Macaw.
Those are guarantees for good birdies around here.
