According to Christian Barnard Jewelers: "It takes 250 tons of ore to retrieve a 1ct diamond (cut weight). It takes several years of training before an apprentice is authorized to cut 1ct diamonds. A good one-carat diamond is one in a million."
In addition, diamonds are 140 times as hard as any other existing subtance.
I guess these attirvutes make them more valuable than other stones.

    Because of their status.

It goes along with that whole "the more material stuff you own and the 'better' material stuff you own; the better/richer YOU are."

Had humans not given them status then they'd just be like a rock, today.

It's pretty much bunk but because of how they've been advertized/used and labeled (people of 'quality' have given diamonds their quality) and since people want things that they see as being quality it becomes all about status.

As for value based on price alone? Status gave it a price.....supply and demand increased it.

Then Supply and Demand & Status walked, merrily, hand in hand off into the sunset knowing that as long as they remained together they would be very rich. lol

The visual appeal of white diamonds is their very high refractive index, which means that they "sparkle" more than any other gemstone. Of course, it is the sheer rarity and consequent high price of such stones that makes them so prestigious, and hen ce so desirable.

Because colour in a gem stone is often caused by an impurity.
