Not really. Most airplanes use their main engines for power when on the ground but at such low power settings that a gearbox is unnecessary.
Modern planes have them, but probably not in the way you think. It is an accessory takeoff from the jet engines that reduces the 30,000 + rpm engine speed to a manageable speed for things such as the generators. It is called a CSD, or constant speed drive.
On a jet, reverse thrust is obtained by vectoring the exhaust flow forward.
Some piston airplanes have had a gear reduction. For example, the Cessna 175 came with an engine that was turned at a higher rpm to make more power. If kept at a 1:1 ratio at the prop, the tips would have been at the speed of sound, making too much noise and decreasing efficiency.

Not true, most modern fan jets have gearboxes. Internals of a jet engine spin at a very high speed (40k rpm's)so they need to be slowed before the final drive fan
