There are two kinds of death, I believe. There is physical death and spiritual death. As a previous answer said, physical death is the end of life or biological function.

Spiritual death is separation from God. We must realize what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross. Dying to forgive sin, Christ saved us from eternal separation from God the Father.

I believe we must live without sin to the best of our abilities and have a relationship with Christ to avoid spiritual death.

Death is an event, which when happends basically terminates all the bodys processes.
First the body shuts down, then approx 2 mins later the brain dies as do all thoughts and memories, etc.

IMO, the brain is like computer RAM. It needs constant oxygen to work. Once oxygen is no longer supplied to the brain it loses all data, which can not be recovered.

In order to understand death we must first understand life.
