1) the land has been taken up by commercial buildings.
2) not allowed to drive on grass anymore.
lol
I wondered why as well, they were a great form of entertainment, for families, and young couples,or a group of friends. They were far more fun than movie theatres.I would say the theatres pushed them out of business by some means.
:) SOB. I miss them.
I suppose the rising realty prices did them in.
Television/VCR/DVD's arrived! Drive-Ins provided cheap family entertainment. We have a couple of drive-ins in southern California that I suppose still show movies. But it is easier and cheaper to rend DVD's and stay home! :) Happy Tuesday M.C.S.! :) ((hugs))
Far to many pregnancy's.
I think its because when they first went in the area where they were built had no homes or business around them. But as time passes and things start to build up close to them, these people complain about the noise from drive-in, or the lights from it at night etc and they soon it shut down.
It is what happen to all 3 close to where I live. I grew up going to them, such great fun, great memories.
Well... It dosn't make money.... the use a good amount of land, they can only show one movie at a time, they can only play movies after dark (meaning only two movies per night)... Also you have to keep in mind that most of a theaters revenue is earned at the conceshion stands and at a drive in it is so easy for people to bring in their own refreshments so why would people pay all that extra money when they don't have to. There is a drive-in in a neighboring city to me that I go to every once in a while. I love it, I think they are great. But the fact remains, money is what makes the world go round.
You can watch anything at home on a home video machine.

You're reading "Why" did most of the Drive-in Theaters die out?

The land sales were probably a big factor, shorty88. I remember that most of the drive-ins were outside of town or in a sparse area. As towns and cities expanded and "developed" the land became more valuable and more money could be made by selling to developers.

Oh,,, No we just had those stinky things, I guess our Drive-in wasn't as high class as your's :P
by j ninja... on March 3rd, 2009
The drive-in didn't give them out. You bought them at hardware or auto stores.....Come to think, I haven't seen any around in a while.

Were they screen's just for car's?
by j ninja... on March 3rd, 2009
Yeah, they were designed to attach to the frame of the window inside, so you could roll the window up or down with them on. All the windows of the front doors at one time were pretty standard size, but you could trim the screens if you needed to.

I don't remember what it was, it had running boared's, you started it up with a button and the back door's opened up backward's. I wouldn't ride in it cause I didn't want people to think I was poor with that old car. Live to have it today. I was a silly youngen' ya know.
