It sound like, to me you may have Restless legs syndrome, this is a neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move when at rest in an effort to relieve these feelings. RLS sensations are often described by people as burning, creeping, tugging, or like insects crawling inside the legs. Often called paresthesias (abnormal sensations) or dysesthesias (unpleasant abnormal sensations), the sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful.

Possibly a potassium deficiency. Try eating some bananas. If does not work see a doctor.

I have this too. My doctor has diagnosed me with RLS: or Restless Leg Syndrome. I was taking a drug called Requip, but it started to interfere with my sleep and I stopped taking it. I find if I am very active that by the end of the day I am too tired for the symptoms to bother me to the point of pain. I have been going through this for several years and at least now it does not get to the pain stage very often. I would suggest making an appointment with your doctor to discuss your symptoms. I know several people who take Requip with no side effects. I'm just one of the unlucky ones.

    Good luck.

Pins and needles come from restoring a blood supply to a region where it was cut off. Shaking the legs forces more blood through (because there are one-way valves in the veins) and would help restore the circulation quicker.
But why would your circulation be cut off by lying down? ... I think you should see a doctor just in case.

I think if you have a tredmill in your home that you could jump on that will help the supply of blood circulate throught your legs and your body and you will feel better, if you walk at least 30 min a day straight.
