Seasons are also used to compare parts of life; spring: birth, youth; summer: adulthood; Fall: middle age; Winter: old age, death. Your riddle comes from antiquity and is known as the riddle of the Sphinx and was asked by the Greek Sphinx at Thebes to Oedipus in Sophocles' work "Oedipus Tyrannous." She would ask the riddle of passing travelers and if they failed to answer it, would eat them. When Oedipus answered her question, she destroyed herself.
