Alternate history books are usually about worlds which are like our own (so, a bit like fantasy novels) - but the difference is not in some inherent part of the universe, like "dragons exist", but in an event that occurred differently. It's speculative fiction that says, "What would the world be like if xyz had happened differently? What would be the same?"
