    Over and Out

When my husband and I first got married (a million years ago), he handed me a pair of his socks and asked if I would darn them! I just looked at him. (My Mom never darned socks and I couldn't have done it if I wanted to.) I felt like telling him, "Heck I'll damn them before I darn them!!! Toss them out and get a new pair.

I grew up in darned socks; and I usually darned them myself.

I used to back in the day. Haven't for years with the exception of my favorite lucky mountain bike riding sox. I stitched those babies up more than a few times.

Mom used to darn socks, so yes, I've worn them. I have a great pair of over-the-calf knit winter socks. The heel has given out, but they are so warm and comfy I think I'll pick up a darning needle and some yarn and fix them. How hard can it be?

Both - worn them and darned them myself. They aren't comfortable, though. Holes wore in places where the sock and the foot rubbed a lot - like at the heel - and darning puts extra thickness right there. It can hurt and cause a blister; also, the hole tends to appear again pretty soon because the rubbing is even worse. Let's hear it for having enough money to buy new socks!

Yes. My mother used to darn my socks when I was a child. I can also remember sewing up "runs" in my stockings when I was a teenager. If the runs were in sight I used to put clear nail polish on them.

Yes, I have darned socks and worn darned socks, although my mother did most of the darning. We didn't have much money when I was a teen, and holey socks just had to be fixed. My mother used a light bulb for a darning egg. She got pretty darned good at it, no pun intended. You really didn't mind the patches much.

Yes. I used to sew up the holes in them. Don't now though, usually just go out and buy new socks. Which I just did actually last week - for hubby and me.

No. Socks are quite cheap where I live.

You can get 3 pairs for £1 at our local £1 (thrift) store. That's around $1.40.

If I didn't live in a city and these things were more expensive or hard to come by then I probably would darn them.
