I think that there is probably a bit of scare mongering going on, but at the same time the fears are valid.
I reckon we'll be the death of ourselves in one way or another sooner or later. I think we'll all blow each other off the face of the earth before we destroy it, and the earth will recover (albeit a different place).

I just happened across a series of articles (http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.html?id=22003a0d-37cc-4399-8bcc-39cd20bed2f6&k=0) that I think everyone here should read. In recent years those that support the scare campaign known as global warming have increasingly tried to dismiss those that disagree with them on this issue as being untrustworthy, in the pockets of of various industries, cranks, and/or one the periphery of the scientific community. In this series of articles the credentials of several global warming critics are examined and their arguments presented. If you will take the time to go through the articles, you will find that they are not what the global warming advocates claim they are. You will also get a perspective that such people don't want you to have.

One of the articles that I found particularly interesting (http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.html?id=edae9952-3c3e-47ba-913f-7359a5c7f723&k=0) tells about how Mars is also experiencing warming. Obviously, it would be very hard to make an argument that we humans are responsible for Martian global warming. So, perhaps another explanation should be sought that accounts for the changes in the climates of both planets.

    ********************
"jangobean: Like i've said previously, the big problem isn't what or who has caused it - the problem is what are we going to do about it?"

If we don't really know what is causing climate change, then how can we really formulate a response to it? For example, before we discovered that it was microscopic organisms that cause diseases, people tried many different things to cure people. Most of the time, the "cures" were ineffective at best to deadly at worst. Until you understand the true nature of a problem, you are not likely to be able to find the solution to that problem. If global warming is caused by wholly natural processes, as some contend, then all of the solutions that the environmentalist propose would have us crippling our economies for nothing. Ever since the inception of modern environmentalism, the environmentalists have been making predictions of doom. Back in the late 70's and early 80's the fear was not global warming, it was global cooling. The were predicting that we were heading into a new ice age. That did not get enough attention. One of the gurus of the environmental movement, Paul Ehrlich predicted wide spread famines cause be a shortage of most resource because he said the Earth was getting over populated. However, ALL of his prediction proved to be grossly exaggerated to just plain wrong. Despite the track record people still listen to him. The fact of the matter is that the dire predictions of these people keep failing to materialize. Yet they want us to listen to them and alter behavior based on this faulty track record. I will take them more seriously when they can actually start to make accurate predictions.

    *****************
I have been slowly working my way through the series of articles to which I linked above. If you don't read any of the other, you really should read "The original denier: into the cold" (http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.html?id=63ab844f-8c55-4059-9ad8-89de085af353&k=0). This one describes the politics that go on behind the scenes of the IPCC. It talks about how the report summaries are not written by the scientists, but by politicians and how they really do not reflect the findings in the reports themselves. It also talks about how those that support the cataclysmic predictions are rewarded with research grants and those that question these conclusions are punished through character assassination and the withdrawal of funding.

This issue of funding is particularly interesting because it reveals the hypocrisy of the global warming alarmists because one of the criticisms that they level against those that dispute their finding is that they are being funded by industry. So, of course their findings are biased. However, we are supposed to ignore the fact that this issue of funding based bias is a two edged sword. If we can't trust the scientists who are funded by industry, the why should we trust the scientists who face the very real possibility of being destroyed academically and financially if they don't tow the alarmist line?

I don't think planet Earth is doomed but I do think the majority of life including our own is doomed due to our selfishness and disregard for everything when it comes to how fast we can progress. I think that when we eventually wipe ourselves and the life out, this planet will be happy at the chance to rapair itself without the fleas that have been sucking it dry.

I think we can make it better but as for reversing it, I am not so sure. Alot of damage has been done already to the environment, climate, humans and animals as a result. I am just glad I won't be around in 25-30 years to see what the atmosphere and climate are like on Earth.

If the Earth is doomed due to global warming, there isn't much we could do about it. Sure, we can try to prevent things like global warming by making a concious effort to support ecological mindedness worldwide. In the end though, it will eventually happen. That's if it even is happening, because I don't trust whatever I hear lately, especially stuff that causes big scares like this. If we really are doomed, why worry about it? We can't stop it, so just sit back and relax, and await the last moments of mankind.

No I do not believe the earth is doomed . Every few weeks new reports are coming out full of scare stories . The one where the hole in the Ozone layer is actually closing got very little news time at all.
What are we really supposed to believe.

From what top climatic scientests say ,global warming has started and cannot be reversed. They do say that I can slowed by cutting back on greenhouse gases. It is logical that if we keep consuming greenhouse gases at the wastefull rate we are doing now, then it will not be slowed down.Maybe it is a good idea to carpool, use the car only when necessary.Turn down the heat when away from the home. The real effects will be see by the generations to come.

It took a long time for the earth to react from our misuse of the environment, so we have an equally long time to make changes and fixes before we are doomed.

We're pretty much done. We're too greedy, too stupid, too selfish, too apathetic to even save ourselves. This dialogue says it much better than I ever could, it's from the movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (2008):

Helen Benson: I need to know what's happening.

Klaatu: This planet is dying. The human race is killing it.

Helen Benson: So you've come here to help us.

    Klaatu: No, *I* didn't.

Helen Benson: You said you came to save us.

Klaatu: I said I came to save the Earth.

Helen Benson: You came to save the Earth... from us. You came to save the Earth *from* us.

Klaatu: We can’t risk the survival of this planet for the sake of one species.

Helen Benson: What are you saying?

Klaatu: If the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the Earth survives. There are only a handful of planets in the cosmos that are capable of supporting complex life...

Helen Benson: You can’t do this.

Klaatu: ...this one can't be allowed to perish.
Helen Benson: We can change. We can still turn things around.

Klaatu: We've watched, we've waited and hoped that you *would* change.

    Helen Benson: Please...

Klaatu: It's reached the tipping point. We have to act.

    Helen Benson: Please...

Klaatu: We'll undo the damage you've done and give the Earth a chance to begin again.

Helen Benson: Don't do this. Please, we can change. We can change.

Klaatu: The decision is made. The process has begun.

    Helen Benson: Oh God.

    -----------------

Unfortunately, Mother Earth is not that lucky. We *can't* change!

Probably nuclear war will destroy Earth before Climate Change is able to. In any case, many of us are awaiting Jesus' return to Earth to take us to Heaven and judge everyone else. I predict Armageddon will precede our doom by global warming.

OK my 2 cents if we slow down climate change then we will in turn have time to find ways to reverse the damaging effects that have been set in motion, this has been done before and it can be done again.

We are only doomed if we allow ourselves to be doomed. But it would be monumentally stupid, like somebody ramming a retaining wall with his or her car at full speed deliberately and without wearing a seat-belt.
