Dont forget to get rid of the smell. If the cat sontinues to smell his/her own smell they will still go there. There are many good products to use that completely rid the smell. As for how to train them, Definately put the cat in the litter box, dont punish the animal for going in the wrong spot unless you see it happen. Animals have very short term memory and after a few minutes forget what has happened. If you punish them after they have forgotten, they don't put 2 and 2 together. Also don't forget to praise them when they do finally go in the box. Good Luck!

After a thorough cleansing, put aluminum foil down along the wall in your brother's room. Cats typically don't like the feel of walking on foil. Next, try limiting kitty to a small, quiet room with her litter box so that she gets some familiarity with it, and it takes on her scent. After she begins using it regularly, move it slowly (about two feet a day) to its permanent, secluded spot where she won't be interrupted. If possible, have the litter box in a location where kitty has two routes--in and out.

I would get the cat, get the poop and put the poop in the kitty litter along with the cat. Also you may want to periodically put the cat in the litter box just like you would periodically put your child on the toilet. Why have you waited 1 year to tackle this issue?

How long have you had him? Is this new behavior? Cats don't like to share litter boxes, and if you have other cats, he will smell them and go elsewhere. Vets recommend separate boxes. Also, is it scrupulously clean? Cats are meticulous creatures, and refuse a soiled box. If this is new behaviour, it could be a urinary tract infection. Some cats associate the discomfort and pain with the box, and so choose to do it elsewhere. Have him checked out by your vet. And you will have to put down a repellant in the old area, or he will return. Good luck! Been there!
