No, and it is this notion that is dividing this country. The same man that is backing this stimulus money may well nationalize even more banks, and that is socialism.

America is what it is because of capitalism. America will cease to be great by embracing socialism. Problems cannot be great if they were not once small.

Actually, It's more like being very patriotic. All of the governors clamoring around with their hands out grabbing for that "stimulus" money is being bought by the Three Stooges, (Obama, Pelosi, Reid). Some governors really see what is going on and they're not going to be bought. Welcome to the new USSR, the United States Socialist Republic.

    No.

Unpatriotic is just a dumb term.

By that logic, if I turn down money, I hate America.

    Makes DEFINITE sense.

Honestly, if a governor thinks that they can solve their problems without the help of fed money, all the power to them.

It creates an example of how republicans can do things right if it works, and wrong if it doesn't.

Either way, it fuels the political agenda.

I think they are stupid. How would you like it if you needed assistance and your governor refused money?

If their constituents back their decision they are doing their job. Either way it is not unpatriotic.

I notice the republican governors that turn down money only where it applies to jobless benefits and that is in states that have "right to work" laws. Laws that discourage unions because unions make workers part of the decision making process. Today's republicans are essentially fascists and fascists believe that common people should be loyal workers and follow management's orders.

The jobless benefits come with worker's rights changes, unacceptable to republican regimes.

About 40% of the stimulus package benefits republican states. Republican senators think they have the best of both worlds. They voted against the package and benefit from it at the same time. If it works, the voters will forget, if it fails, they can say "I told you so"

Absolutely!!! It is every American's duty to take as much as they can from the other citizens, as much and as quickly as they can. After all, if we can't trust our government, who can we trust?

I don't see how anyone could say so. I think it's more fiscally responsible to turn down such funds if they go against state laws OR if they have "strings" that governors don't wish to abide by. The federal government never gives away money for free. There are always strings.

For instance, Bobby Jindal, of Louisiana, is specifically against accepting federal money to increase state unemployment tax coverage. His reasoning is that while in the short term, this money is free, in additional years the state is going to have come up with these additional funds themselves in order to continue the level of coverage. It's sort of like a drug dealer offering the first few tastes free. The populace gets addicted to the new welfare benefits and then the money runs out and the state has to come up with those additional monies to pay for their own fix. It makes sense, but only to those looking at the long-term benefits for the state. I think it's responsible.

The governor of Mississippi is saying much the same thing. “Subject to learning more, my position is that Mississippi won’t accept funds that require us to have a tax increase later, because [they would force] us to change our rules for qualifying for unemployment compensation,” he said.

I wouldn't say unpatriotic, but could be political suicide. I know a lot of these republican governors are thinking about refusing the extending the unemployment benefits portion of the stimulus. With thousands of people losing their jobs every month, I’m not convinced that this is a wise move…

There is something wrong with this page, so this a reply to Daijin's comments:

Well, my comment disappeared again... this is very frustrating.

2012 re-election may not be a problem because the Mayan Calendar says the world ends.

To hedge my bets, I'll pretend the world will continue and decision will be whether we want to re-elect Obama. If he manages to pull us out of this inherited depression, his re-election is assured.

My point is that every time politicians remove regulations or fail to oversee the economy we have a depression. Proposed regulations are labeled socialism or whatever is the name of the current progressive bogyman.

We've had twenty nine years (since Reagan) to prove that there is no such thing as trickle down economics. In truth, wealth trickles up, eventually to be concentrated in a very small minority, the middle class disappears and the economy stops. It's inevitable and inevitably dismissed by "supply siders". They never learn and Americans always forget.

To answer the question it is wrong to label the governors that refuse unpatriotic, they're just stupid.
