Why is the Southern European campaign of WW2 controversial? Some say that Churchill forced the German invasion upon Greece to spread the war over the entire continent? is there truth to this allegation?

I have not read the book that you mention, but I have heard mention of a Churchillian conspiracy in Greece. I do not believe it. No one forced the Germans to invade there, and they had plenty of excellent reasons of their own to do so. Primarily Hitler wanted to secure his southern flank for the coming invasion of the Soviet Union. Of more immediate concern was that Mussolini had opened a can of worms by invading Greece, believing it an easy opportunity to claim glory, and then colossally failing to the point that the Germans had to intervene or else British forces arriving in Greece could begin a counteroffensive in 1940!
The more common controversy is whether the Mediterranean campaign was really necessary at all. British forces there eventually received orders to attack Madagascar, repel German forces in the Mid-East, attack Somalia, attack in Greece, secure Crete, and defend Egypt all at the same time. Such a division of forces insured many failures and the terrible waste of precious troops and equipment. The counter argument is that Churchill was eager to protect what few friends England had left and to show the world that they were willing to carry the fight anywhere and to the end.
