Question

Help answer this question below.

I have two full-grown boxers in my home and they are very aggressive toward other animals... dogs, cats, you name it. I have wanted to adopt a kitten for some time, Is there anyway to make a new kitten and my boxers get along, or is there no hope.

Before you even consider bringing another animal into your home, you need to address your dogs' aggression. Hell, even if you DON'T bring another animal into your home, you need to address your dogs' aggression. You'll have a mighty large lawsuit on your hands if your "very aggressive" boxers do something to another animal while you're walking them or if they escape from the yard. Heaven forbid anything happens, but you'd lose them if they did anything to someone else's animal.

My suggestion would be to contact a dog behaviorist. Also pick up a copy of Cesar Milan's book, "Cesar's Way," and check out his website (http://www.cesarmillaninc.com). He's the "Dog Whisperer," and I know it might sound silly but, when it comes to dogs, this guy is a genius. If you can ever catch his show on National Geographic, I'm sure you'd pick up some helpful tips. But definitely you NEED to get your dogs' behavior under control, especially if you want to bring another animal into your home. Good luck, I really hope you can get them taken care of...believe me, you AND your dogs will be happier!

Have they always been aggresive? If so, they probably aren't going to change. I have an adult female boxer and she is so sweet.....but she can be meaner than anything if I tell her to. I think that you should take the effort and bring the kitten into the house. Boxers are intelligent, loving dogs, and they usually care about pleasing people. If you introduce the cat slowly, and as a friend, I think they would be okay. Just make sure you pay the same amount of attention to them as always so they dont feel threatened.

We Have a dog and a cat simple. They were both newborn and grew up with each other. Now when we got a kitten a few years later the cat and the dog completly rejected the kitten, to the point where if we left the kitten in the room, 1 of them would have ripped it to shreds. Some animals dont like change while others feel like if they let slip of your attention they might not be able to get it back. The two things i would suggest is 1 try it and find out or seek proffesional help we dont want ur poor defensless kitten to disapeer do we?(we got rid of the kitten)

I have grown up with Boxers and have surrounded myself and my life with them, they are my past time and my life. Do you live in the country where you have little socialization for these dogs?

That is my first thought. Lack of socialization.

Boxers naturally are very very friendly they are known to be clowns, but they are protective of their homes. A kitten would become part of the home, so they may not actually hurt the cat, but protect it.

My next thought is these two could be protecting each other. Are you seen as the pack leader in the house? Are you "the boss" or is one of them the boss? It is important they know you are the boss.

Are they protective on leash only or on and off leash?

I would recommend going on Yahoo groups, there are boxer forums on there that you can join. you ask and answer questions through e-mails. It is fabulous and I promise you will learn a ton. I bet you could find someone there to give you help.
