If the car title is not in your possesion, if you have a loan on it, the courts will advise you through mail. If you do have the title, I suggest writting a bill of sale, sell it to a friend for a dollar, have a lawyer notorize it as a legal transaction, and they won't be able to take the car, as it now belongs to your friend.
