I'm going to watch House of Flying Daggers tonight and have every reason to believe this will be an excellent film.

Plot summary from Netflix - "Near the end of the Tang Dynasty, police deputies Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Leo (Andy Lau) tangle with Mei (Ziyi Zhang), a dancer suspected of having ties to a revolutionary faction known as the House of Flying Daggers. Completely bowled over by Mei's alluring beauty, the deputies concoct a plan to save her from capture, with Jin leading her north on a perilous journey into the unknown."

BE WITH ME - a Singaporean film about love. It's one of those slow, slow, slow movies with very little dialogue - in fact there's less than three mins. of talk in the whole thing. It follows several people around who have loved and lost or who are unrequited. There's a chubby security guard, a young teenage lesbian, an elderly man, a deaf/mute woman and others. So good. Beautifully filmed.

Crimson Rivers II: Angels of the Apocalypse
(Les Rivières pourpres II: Les anges de l'apocalypse)
It's a French movie, starring Jean Reno (Mission Impossible, Ronin, Leon The Professional, and many others), a sequel that really stands on its own. It is about 2 cops whose investigations lead them to pursue a ruthless group of monks on steroids, led by the great Christopher Lee, in search of power locked inside an ancient religious artifact.

I love both of the movies in the "series" and own them on dvd but this one really stands out.

I would also recommend Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte Des Loups). A French action/monster/religious conspiracy/period piece. It's a great movie, and if for nothing else, you should see it because Monica Bellucci is in it, if she's your sort of thing....

Have seen a few lately so I can't pick just one:

9th Company: Russian film about Soviet soldiers in Afghanistan during the '80s, really intense look at the futility of that war and interesting in that it is based (though rather loosely) on an actual event.

Shtrafbat (Penal Battalion): Russian film (mini-series) dealing with Soviet soldiers during WW2, follows the soldiers of a 'punishment battalion' (basically thrown into battle first, sent on suicide missions, etc.; composed of political prisoners, deserters, etc.). Really good, best way I can describe it is as Russian equivalent to Band of Brothers, I'm only about half way through it so not sure how it ends yet.

Talvisota (The Winter War): Finnish film, based around the novel by Antii Turri, about Finnish soldiers in the '39 to '40 Winter War with the USSR, based around actual events though the characters are fictional to the best of my knowledge.

Angel-A: French film, premise follows an Algerian immigrant in France who is pretty much a complete loser, an angel is sent to help him remake his life and he ends up falling for her.

Joyeux Noel: French film, fictionalized account of the Christmas Truce of 1914 when soldiers in many sections of the front laid down their weapons for the holiday and celebrated it peacefully with their enemies. Really pretty heart wrenching and beautiful story, not to mention some good bagpipe music in there :).

Sorry for the rather heavy slant towards war and the Eastern Bloc, have always had a big interest in Eastern Europe and WW1 & 2 so it kind of follows that those sorts of films appeal to me a lot.
