According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, there are 13,670 islands that make up Indonesia. Over 7,000 of them are uninhabited.

That's right. We were always taught that there were about 14000 islands. Many are just small atolls, that barely stay above the water line, or are uninhabitable, due to lack of fresh water. The largest islands are: Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo),Sumatra, Sulawesi, Irian-Papua (shared with New Guinea) and Java. The most famous island would be Bali of course.

about 14000 though only 6000 of them are inhabited. most are very small, and either do not have water supplies or go under in storms. The largest islands are Kalimantan (shared with Malaysia and Brunei), Sumatera, Java, Sulawesi and Papua/Irian, the other half of Papua New Guinea. indonesia has MORE than 18000 island.. the exact amount is UNKNOWN. even by it's goverment. some of it a tidal island, and some brake apart after the last big earthquake, which make it even harder to count :D
