  • According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, there are 13,670 islands that make up Indonesia. Over 7,000 of them are uninhabited.
  • That's right. We were always taught that there were about 14000 islands. Many are just small atolls, that barely stay above the water line, or are uninhabitable, due to lack of fresh water. The largest islands are: Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo),Sumatra, Sulawesi, Irian-Papua (shared with New Guinea) and Java. The most famous island would be Bali of course.
  • about 14000 though only 6000 of them are inhabited. most are very small, and either do not have water supplies or go under in storms. The largest islands are Kalimantan (shared with Malaysia and Brunei), Sumatera, Java, Sulawesi and Papua/Irian, the other half of Papua New Guinea. The best known island is Bali, but it is quite small. Indonesia is my specialty to if you have questions, feel free to ask. I work with orphanages in Bali, www.webpastor.com/orphans.htm
  • Indonesia is the island country composed of the most islands and is the world's largest archipelago with over 18,000 islands. About 6,000 of Indonesia's islands are inhabited.
  • "Indonesia comprises 17,508 islands according to Indonesian government estimates, with about 6,000 of those inhabited. The country extends from adjacent the Malay Peninsula in its west and into Melanesia in its east. According to a 2002 survey by National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), Indonesia has 18,306 islands. Counting tidal islands (periodically submerged) doubles the island figure, and many islands with no name or the same names, making it very confusing even to the government of Indonesia. Management of the islands sometimes includes a Regency (Indonesia) covers a small island chain. On September 21, 2007, an 8.4 Earthquake struck Sumatra near South Pagai Island, producing a cluster of 6 small new islands, and enlarging others by uplift.[1] A large portion of Indonesia is seismically active, the number, size, shape of islands continues to evolve."
