Depends. If your oil has the gear shaped logo with the words "for gasoline engines", then your oil already has the same chemical as Slick 50, along with a dozen other additives. Thus, Slick 50 will do what it claims to do, but it may already be in the oil you use. If you use a cheaper grade, then your oil has no additives in it. Adding Slick 50 won't hurt, may even help...but overall it's less expensive to use a better grade of oil.

NO! Slick 50 is a combination of additives that are already in the oil you have, in addition to teflon-derived substances which will simply clog the oil passages in your engine. The company behind Slick 50 has been involved in numerous false advertising lawsuits and has been investigated by federal and state governments. If you're worried about maintaining your engine properly, do regular oil changes, or better yet, switch to synthetic (unless your manufacturer recommends otherwise). The best synthetics on the market are, in order, Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple. Mobil 1 has a semi-synthetic. They used to have a true synthetic, but after losing a lawsuit with Castrol about Syntec, they switched to the false formula. What Castrol has and Mobil 1 has adopted is a super-refined regular oil, which while comparable to real synthetic in most cases (and utterly superior to regular oil), is markedly inferior when extreme temperatures, pressures and endurance are involved.

After market additives such as Slick 50 are not as effective as the additives already present in the oil. I agree with the gentleman above. Using a higher grade oil will be better. Synthetic oil such as Amsoil reduce start up wear significantly, even at cold temperatures. You might want to take a look through richmondsynthetics.com. Though Amsoil synthetics have been around for 30 years (Amsoil is actually the first in synthetics) a lot of people don't know about the benefits of synthetic oil. This is why I list this website, I'm sure you know what the other oil companies that provide synthetics are.

I agree with respondent 2 (Warspite). I used Slick 50 over 12 times over a period of 2 years and it completely ruined my engine (Saturn). When Warspite says that it clogs oil passages in one's engine- this is EXACTLY what happened to my engine. Now it burns an unusual amount of oil. In fact I have to go through 3-4 quarts now every 500 miles! I could not get the car through CA smog w/o changing the catalytic converter. This never happened in all the prior years i'd owned this vehicle. SLICK 50 NEEDS TO BE PULLED OFF THE MARKET! IT DAMAGES ENGINES PERMANENTLY. A SHORT TERM MILEAGE INCREASE IN EXCHANGE FOR LONG TERM PROBLEMS LEADING TO THE DEATH OF YOUR ENGINE.

I've been using Slick 50 or an equivilent product in my '88 Escort every 50K miles ever since I bought 16 years ago. It currently has 500,000 miles on it and is using a quart of oil about every 1000-1200 miles. It is still running on the original engine and has never been rebuilt.
