I actually think both should be accompanied with an explanation. But the system is the system and it seems to work. So I go with the flow. But in the moments I feel the urge to DR, I feel more obligated to say why then than I do if I am feeling a UR coming on. But I often wonder what the usefulness of downrating is. If I don't like a question or an answer, I just move along most of the time.

Because some people take it to heart when they get downrated..even when they deserve it..saying that I think f someone dr's they should have the decency to say why!!!

Because uprating doesn't usually warrant explanation. If you like it, it's because you agree, you think it is clever or funny. People usually feel complimented when they get uprated. Downrates are different, because it leaves you wondering what was so bad about what you said.

I think ythe reason that a comment isn't required is to avoid retaliatory dr'ing and flame wars. That kinda makes sense.

After my first day here, I've never down rated a question or answer. If I disagree with an answer and it's worth the time, I comment and not rate at all. I usually comment when I give a positive rating on an answer--sometimes if I'm giving positive ratings on several answers to a question I will only comment on one or two of them because my comments would become redundant. I only rarely comment when I give a positive rating on a question--although if a question is particularly well though out or intriguing, I can't resist thanking the questioner. Thanks for your question!

Human nature my friend. No one likes to think they have said or done anything wrong and when it appears they have they want to be able to defend themselves. A down-rate without explanation is much like a slap in the back of the head in a crowded elevator and no one owning up to it or offering a reason why. I sometimes will state why I up-rate and I simply do not down-rate as I see no sense in it. 0 rating is unhelpful in my book negative ratings is over kill. If it is that bad it should be flagged and removed not dragged through the streets of AB. Most who down-rate do so because they feel they have power over another and they really do not want to have to explain their actions. Because they too do not like thinking they are wrong for what they do.

I thought about this as well. I think if the DRer could remain anonymous they might feel more at ease about leaving a comment. We wouldn't know who it was but it would put our minds at ease knowing the WHY it was done. =) +5
