Software uses ram. Having lots of open applications will use up your availible memory. Operating systems also use ram... A lot of it. If someone is running a Windows XP machine with only 128MB ram, it is time to upgrade. The OS uses 120MB just to run.

Math intensive processes like drawing complex graphics as in gaming, manipulating large photo files or manipulating big files like movies. Burning movies, etc.

All running programs use some RAM. Anywhere from 1-100MB per program. Aside from you operating system anything over 100MB is considered high... but there are some games and video editing software that uses that much. Also, keeping a program open for a long time can sometimes increase it's RAM usage. When I leave Firefox open for several hours it will start to run 100+MB of RAM. It's good to close the programs every once in a while.
