  • Buy a guitar chord book and learn some chords.
  • I asked a friend to teach me. it worked. after i learned the basic chord changes, i purchased a guitar book and learned more, on my own. i also listened to tapes and cd's of guitar music. If you have the natural talent to play a guitar, it will come...........naturally. Practice, practice, practice.
  • Go to amazon.com or ebay and you can get a guitar and a "teach yourself to play" book pretty cheap.
  • I do know that it is possible to not have lessons and just learn by experimenting, jimmi hendrix and SLash learned this way
  • if you go to news agency you wuill find mags and some of them have dvds and cds to help you learn but if you want to become great learn classical once you can play all classical you can play just about anything
  • get a teach yourself book with something called tabs or tablatures. they are much easier than regular notes. Learn rythym and after you get good with tabs you can go to ultimate-guitar.com and practice some easy songs.
  • Look up guitar tabs online. Sit down with your guitar and just pluck away until you get it right. It'll take forever, but it's a good way to go about it. Or learn a few chords off the net or from a friend, and strum them, change up the strum pattern and chord progression, and make up some lyrics, silly or otherwise. Another way that seems to work well for guys is: Find someone you're really interested in. That will motivate you to learn songs for them! :)
  • Watch heaps of cool rock videos and try to copy them.
  • I would suggest listening to your favourite tunes and trying to play along. Learn bit by bit. It takes a while, but if you'r keen enough, it WILL come. Also, a cord book might help a little lot.
  • Yes, all wonderful answers...I learned as well without a teacher by choosing a few simple three chord songs that I could play and sing (alot of Bob Marley and Bob Dylan for me but there are many others) Once I got those down I just keep practicing more complicated songs, sometimes you have a song you really want to learn but its just too hard right now. Use those songs as reference points to see how much you're improving. Keep practicing and you can do it.
  • Good suggestions but if you are serius about playing I would suggest learning the theory behind the music as well. Also seems a daft suggestion but learn every note on the neck. You should be able to find any note on any string without thining about it. Understanding the fundamentals of rhythm, harmony and melody will greatly help your playing and composing.
  • Practice really is the thing. Your fingers need to toughen up like hell and your grip really strengthens after a while. Try learning just G, D, C and Em and all sorts of possibilities will open up to you.
  • HAVE A friend teach u
  • Get accord poster. Also keep your ears open around you.Someone might play and you don't know it.Most good musicans don't go around blabbing about playing. And 9 times out of 10 they will show you a few things, because they want you to also, play.
  • Tabliature
  • See my answer at http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2657984 (no... these are similar question, but not the same)
  • Learn the chords from the manual and watch as many videos as possible. If you can learn the notes it is much better.Train your ears to identify the various chords and form a small group to learn from each other especially on the tuning, the chord progressions and the timing.Master one song at a time and progressively follow a song without looking at the notes.Detail scaling and licks can be learned from the various web sites. Practice and practice until perfection.Once you are ready show your video to the world through You tube to get your ratings.Dont overlook on the right equipments and your electric guitar. Go to ebay for these.
  • Lessons can be very expensive, well not just they can be, they are. I decided that instead of going to a private instructor like most of my friends had i would purchase a set of DVD guitar lessons. My friends told me that they were learning how to play songs with their instructors, which was cool and all, but when it came to a true foundation in guitar they didn't have one. I used the complete basic course from the site http://www.metalmethod.com/101.html it was pretty inexpensive and once i started using it i realized it's worth way more than the price it's sold at. The good thing about the DVD guitar lessons is you can use them when it's conveinent for you. Guitar playing shouldn't feel like a chore, or something that should be done a certain day at a certain time. I can use the lessons anytime i like and if i ever run into any questions i just go to the online forum the company has. anyway, i would suggest checking it out. right now it's at a discounted rate at the website http://guitarlessonreview.info/ but you can always try their individual lessons (start with the first couple stages for less than $25!) by going to the website i mentioned above. it's worth it.
  • See if there are any free classes offered in your area or nearby towns. I wouldn't recommend that you try to teach yourself. I had a lot of self-taught guitar students come to me for lessons, and they had so ruined their playing with wrong approaches and bad habits that I had to tell them I had to turn them away - they were past the point of being helped.
  • learn how to play songs you like to listen to.
