If you are trying to watch TV off of an antenna or cable, you will need a tuner of some sort. There are devices that cost about $100 which plug into your USB port and the antenna plugs into it. They will allow you to watch TV and use your computer like a DVR. However, I have to say that my experience with these sort of devices is less than great. They don't get very good reception compared to a regular TV (they tend to have inferior, noisy tuners). Also, if you want to use you computer as a DVR, you'll find that it's not as good as something like a TiVo because you are lacking guide information. You can subscribe to guide services, and it costs like $10/6 months, if I remember right. I've found that their software is buggy too, especially on the cheaper tuner devices. Hauppage is one of the better brands, but there are others too. Google around a bit and see what you can find. Try googling for USB television tuner
