My husband and I are planning on selling our town house that we have owned for 3 years. We will be living with family for 1 year to save money. How long do we have to pruchase a place before we get capital gains tax on the sale of our town house

    Those are the old rules the new rules say you have to live in the house for 3 out of 5 and then you get an exemption of $250 gain each.

    I think it is 18 months but you should ask a tax expert that will know all your details, deductions, and situations.
