You're reading My husband and I are planning on selling our town house that we have owned for 3 years. We will be living with family for 1 year to save money. How long do we have to pruchase a place before we get capital gains tax on the sale of our town house

Just some clarifications: The house must be your "primary residence" for 3 out of the previous 5 years, and the capital gains tax exemption is $250,000 for a single person or $500,000 for a married couple.
