Well my social studies teacher always pronounced it "Me-Di-E-Val" with four syllables. That's the most common way I've heard it said.

According to dictionary.com, it's 4 syllables. The divide it up like this: me⋅di⋅e⋅val I checked Merriam-Webster dictionary too, and it had the same information.

Three or four. This site gives three different audio pronunciations: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/medieval I have a similar question about "realtor". Some pronounce it "ree-la-tor". That's clearly back-woods, but how about the word "real"? Some say it in two syllables; others in one. From dictionary.com: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/real Two: riəl, [ree-uhl] One: ril/ [reel] I believe a linguist would simply observe that all words in a living language are in transition.

I pronounce it "Mid-eev-ul" or "Mid-deev-ul". Therefore, it has 3 syllables for me.
