Wow... I can't believe someone is asking about grits. I rarely admit that I like them because many people don't even believe they exist. I add mine to boiling water to bring them to the consistency I like and then add a handful of mild or sharp shredded cheddar cheese.
-
I cook them per package instructions then I add salt pepper and cheese. I sop the pieces I cant get with the spoon/fork with a piece of buttered toast. YUMMY!!
-
I pour the grits into boiling water while whisking briskly. As I whisk, I add the salt and peppers. I continue whisking until the mixture is sufficiently thickened. When finished, I place into large bowls, smooth it around the interior of the bowls, then ladle in some delicious, hot chili. Top it off with freshly shredded cheddar. Then enjoy!

If I hadn't gone vegan, I'd say grits are delicious with grape jelly and butter!
-
Bring them to a boil with a bit of salt. Turn down the heat and let them slow cook while adding lots of butter, stirring occasionally. Serve with eggs. I prefer sunny side up, but over easy and scrambled works also. The keys are the slow cooking and the butter.

What are grits? I know it's food, but I always thought it was some kind of cereal, like corn. I'm English.

Okay, I like the kind of grits you get around the Cincinnati area. I think it is a recipe brought over from Germany: Made from finely ground meat and pin oats. They are wonderful with butter and syrup on them. (my mouth is watering just thinking about them!). I don't care for the "Southern Styl" grits.

butter and sugar and sugar and sugar i tried the recipe on the box for some 'cheese grits', it was sickening. like "here, let me take this great cheese and make it all thick and gritty with the flavor all toned down". blech

I am English. I have always had a problem with 'grits' because I haven't a clue what they are. The first time I heard about 'grits' was whilst watching "The Beverly Hillbillies" when I was a child (it was a rerun - I'm not that old!) I was as confused then as I am now. In the UK 'grit' is something you put on driveways. Tell me what 'grits' are, and I'll you how I possibly might like them.

In the trash can. I hate grits.

Not in any way. Perhaps it could be dried, treated and used as insulation or something.
