When I did a google search for "Learn Chinese" just a while, I obtained results of 3,070,000. This is incredible! We will not the time to surf all of them.

I have already bookmarked www.chinese-tools.com to be used later when time permits. We perceive a particular website being better because our needs are met there.

Over the few months of learning Mandarin Chinese I find the following websites to be helpful to me and I hope they would be to you as well.

    1) www.mychinastart.com

    2) www.xuezhongwen.net

    3) www.specialchinese.com

    4) www.famouschinese.com

    5) www.clearchinese.com

    6) www.youtube.com (search for "Learn Chinese or Mandarin). You could look up my account: leeks5229 and you will find that I have organized some play lists of useful video clips for the learning of Chinese.

We can help one another in our learning of Mandarin Chinese.

I think the key is to first decide how you would like to learn Chinese. If you are looking for something that is asynchronous, online and free, Chinese-tools.com is actually quite good. There's also the BBC series called Real Chinese, which has received rave reviews. ChinesePod is also great, but from what I hear, they have now started charging for even podcasts. One thing to be aware of though, when starting off as a beginner, these free sites are actually not the best option out there.

If you're a beginner, you really should try to find synchronous learning opportunities. Sites like echineselearning, HelloMandarin and www.StudioChinese.com are great affordable options because they actually provide live teachers online for learning Chinese.

Echineselearning has been around for a while and administers classes via skype. They also use video that focuses on a teacher writing on a blackboard. Last time I checked they were using pdf copies for course materials, which seemed a little sketchy, but they do have many different levels for everyone and they are quite cheap.

StudioChinese on the other hand runs their classes via their own patented e-learning technology, which was designed specifically for online language learning. They only have a complete beginner's course, but it was developed in house. They have interactive online exercises and you'll connect to a teacher once you've finished. They have a free trial with a LIVE teacher and you don't have to schedule to take it. They've got teachers waiting online ready to connect for something like 16 hours each day!

So while there are a lot of options out there, it really depends on what level you are and what type of learning medium you are looking for.
