Assuming you mean someone who has never been a sub before. Take it slow. Get to know the person. Talk to them. LISTEN to them. Observe them as they describe what freaks them out, and how they react when they do. Show them your dungeon or play area. Let them ask questions and see what things are and what they're like. Show them your tools. Let them handle them first. Let them feel them and see them, etc. Gently start slow, a quick on and off of the handcuffs. Watch how they react.

Something basic, like spanking and cuffs. A bad, scary first time has probably turned many subs away before they really found out if they liked the lifestyle or not. And always, I would tell them my rules and use those to set my scenario and lead them to answer questions wrong so that I could punish them. I insist on my rules and love when they are intentionally broken as things get rougher.
