I live alone. I rarely socialise (due to working hours and study patterns). My family live hundreds of miles away in a different country. It is my birthday on Sunday - and i will celebrate that alone. But I am rarely lonely.

Nope. Not at all. Sometimes I'm alone but I've never minded that. Being lonely is a state of mind...a "woe is me" state of mind I think. All you have to do is reach out and help those who need it..volunteer in your community...children's ward in a hospital...senior citizen center. You can't possibly be lonely if you are among people, trying to be useful! :)
