I like to hear compliments once in a while,and a card or flowers is good enough for me starting out.

Too many gifts in the beginning can come off as overdoing it. A little compliment here and there is better than being complimented all through the beginning of the relationship. It gets old after awhile. If you don't want it to get old, don't overdo it. If you treat the girl like the person that she is, you might get a long way. She will most likely notice it, too.
