While our company was cutting back hours for hourly employees, a manager in one of our departments cut a few employees hours but did not cut the hours of the employees that she is friends with outside of work. Is this Illegal?

    In the UK, it would be illegal. When any cuts are made, the manager must be able to show cause why they have chosen to cut as they do.

    In most states, no. As long as your new wage is above minimum wage the manager did nothing wrong. It is illegal to discriminate based on a protected class, but friendship is not a protected class.

    Morally wrong and possibly irresponsible, but not illegal on any grounds. That's the way our world works, unfortunately.

    yes it is illegal for a manager to favor friends over normal work colleges, if you have a trade union where you work bring it to there attention. If not let the main manager know what is going on, or if that fails let them know you will be contacting ACAS www.acas.gov.uk i think that's the web address if not google ACAS
