I am not Zhongguo hua speaker but I would like to share a penny worth of my own thoughts. Reference to Chinese dictionary is generally by radical index and the number of strokes. As far as I know radicals could have from one stroke (example - yi1 or one) to 17 strokes (example 龠 yue4 flute). The radicals could either be in the simplified or traditional forms.
What a pity my English is not good enough, I can not understand what you mean Writing! But my small, the teachers want us to buy the Commercial Press published <Xinhua Dictionary>(中国商务印书馆的<新华字典>).

You're reading I'm using a new chinese dictionary(a genealogy and dictionary).I am a little confused by its use.It uses "trees" to give the derivation of words. Are these the equivalent of radicals? They appear to be but are often MANY strokes.Zhongguo hua speakers help?

yes, I agree but this is a completely different type of dictionary and I Don`t understand where the^`trees`they are using come from....I know how to use a dictionary by radical and by stroke count...but this one leaves me lost...but thanks for answering ....xie xie ni.
