Money counterfeiting goes as far back as money. Early methods involved shaving the edge of coins so they weighed slightly less than they were supposed to or mixing less valuable meddles with gold or silver in coins. It would be difficult to determine who the first person to counterfeit would be, but it existed in Greek, Roman, Egyptian and probably Babylonian cultures.

Counterfeiting money is probably as old as money itself. Before the introduction of paper money, the two main ways of doing it were to mix base metals in what was supposed to be pure gold or silver, or to "shave" the edges of a coin so that it weighed less than it was supposed to. A fourrée is an ancient type of counterfeit coin, in which a base metal core has been plated with a precious metal to look like its solid metal counter part. Interestingly enough, an archeological find in England in recent years was a treasure box of coins, hidden at the fall of Rome. Many of the coins had been shaved. So that was 410 AD. But I'll bet the old cave man, swapping pretty stones was known to pull swifties too...or substitute one skin for another similar....lol
