Sigma6 is right. However, I'd also like to add something.

Your body breaks down carbohydrates (sugars, starches, etc) into glucose. That glucose serves as fuel for metabolic and cellular processes. Any glucose that is not used in these processes is stored as fat for later use.

So, if you have fat stores in your body (like your belly for example), you will need to either increase the amount of glucose used (or calories burned) and or reduce the amount of glucose consumed. If you have a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, but light on meats, high-fat foods, high-sugar foods and processed foods, than reducing your caloric intake shouldn't be the issue.

In that case, you should focus on increasing your body's activity to burn more glucose/calories. This can be accomplished by participating in aerobic activities such as running, stair climbing, aerobic classes, cycling and swimming. As well, by increasing muscle mass, you will raise your body's metabolic rate, meaning that even when sitting or resting, you will burn more glucose/calories.

Chances are, actually, you probably already have a washboard stomach, but it's just hiding behind your fat stores. :-)

In addition, when reducing fat, be sure to only reduce unhealthy fats, as some fats are good for your body and essential to your health. See http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/1294 for more information.

Repeat after me "You can't spot reduce!". Men generally store FAT around their waist, while women generally keep it around their hips. There is no exercise, magical cream (yet), plastic wrap procedure, or anything else other than liposuction, that will remove FAT from a certain area. That's usually the first place it builds up and it's the last place it will depart.

The best way to get and keep a washboard stomach, or shapely hips, is by following a low FAT diet and doing plenty of aerobics. Crunches, or side leg raises, while strengthening and building the muscles, will not make them appear through the layer of FAT between them and the skin. Get rid of the FAT and the abs will should show up and/or the hips will become firm and trim.

Spot reduction can occur and it is a common misconception that it cannot - overweight men often have very lean calves due to the strain of carrying themselves, local fat is burned.

"spot reduction" usually is asked as a short form for "can I just lose the fat on my stomach" and the answer to that (different) question is: NO.

Your body has preferential fat storage spots - so while it is definitely possible to lose fat around arms/legs (look at a weekend cyclist - lean calves, fat on the stomach) and fat that is burned ends up getting replaced and goes first to those spots. You will not naturally spot reduce your abdominals (women: thighs/buttocks) without overall fat loss occuring first.

I disagree. u can spot reduce. there are products that work. you can't sit on your ass and be in a caloric excess and expect it to work, however, transdermals that deliver alpha and beta andrenergic blockers have been working for some time now. - EDIT: for those of you who have responded with disbelief I would recomend that you do a google search for mesotherapy. This is a new treatment offered by plastic surgeons that is NOT a surgery.. but instead micro injections of active ingredients that cause lipolysis. the same can be achieved using transdermal versions of the same active ingredients.
