Yes and I did it without much problem too. I was addicted to pain medication from a car wreck i'd been in. The first thing you have to do is to admit you have a problem. I mean really admit it to yourself and to someone else who you trust and who is not an addict themselves. Then make a decision to turn your life around and to get back in control of it. Usually, believing in something bigger than yourself helps. like God, mabe. Once you do that, start having a plan as to what to do if the need to use hits you. I would put on my shoes and start walking, and I'd keep walking until the urge passed me. Then I'd turn around and walk back. Get mad at the addiction. I got pissed that this addiction had control over my life. that it controlled wheather i felt good or not. wheather i was sick or not. wheather i could function or not. Start going to a group. I know it sounds lame but it really helps you to talk to or listen to other ppl. who are going thru the same thing. It keeps you strong when you start to feel weak and you should make a new straight friend who you can call when you get the urge to use. Start doing things you use to do that you enjoyed like sports, or a hobby you once had, or begin to do art or take a new class. but start doing something new that will fill your time doing something you enjoy. Start hanging out at places or with ppl. who don't center themselves around your addiction. Like dont go to bars. Go to a ballgame or something. and take this thing seriously. and most importantly remember to take it one day at a time, even on somedays you have to take it one hour at a time. but just do it one moment at a time and do like I did or something close to it. When you get the urge to use immediately get away from the phone or the person who is tempting you and start walking until the urge passes. I have other hints too if you want to talk, just contact me thru my email. godiva869@gmail.com I'd be glad to talk to you. Good Luck~!

Sort of....I had a period of...have to write this carefully...abuse of a product that when prepared looks like pieces of soap...and it was terrible (for me; it may have been minor for some other veterans), not so much for the money loss or the burned fingers but for the emotional turmoil and loathing it fed in me. I dibbled and dabbled and finally after a long time, I an now able to think about it and talk about it without acting on it. However, I drink wine every now and then, and partake in h e r b a l refreshment every now and then, but that's where it ends.

It may not fit in with the 12-steppers, which, don't get me wrong, helps lots of folks, but is not for me. I am writing a story/narrative about it.

Willpower, a little common sense and help from my group.

I simply had to distract myself when those cravings came in and take myself away from the person, place or situation that was making me wanna do either of these things.

I'd go onto my cpu and write about how annoyed I was at this thing for having power over me.

Join a support group it sounds a little crazy but it truly works wonders to know you are not the only one in that situation.

Go see or call a non addicted/non involved friend and talk to them you dont even have to tell them whats going on you could just chat for a bit.

Go for a walk and play some music on your mp3, really walk and hit that pavement until you are tired or until the urge is gone.

Join the gym exercise makes you feel better about yourself, gets you fitter and is a great distraction.

Thats all my best advice oh and you cannot solve a problem until you can admit you have a problem.

    Good luck x

Yeah, cigarettes, ecstasy, alcohol, special k, pornography, christianity, depression, unnecessary driving, fast food and other junk food, excessive meat eating, and rage. I still drink alcohol, look at porn, eat junk food, drive when I don't need to and eat meat, just in moderation. These things are no longer an addiction.

Take it slowly. Look at all the bad things about it and bad things that happened to you becuase of the addiction and remind yourself about it everyday so you dont fall back into the addiction. For instance, If your a smoker, instead of lighting up, try taking something else up, like eating something or doing an excersie or a dance(put on music). You dont have to completley stop one day, but you can do it twice instead of 3 tinmes.. and slowly narrow it down. But of course theres patches and rehab groups if your problem is a big problem.
