  • Language Immersion. I have a brother in-law that did this to help with his Spanish. He went to Costa-Rica for a month where he stayed with a family and did not speak a word of English for the entire time he was there.
  • Firstly what are your reasons for wanting to learn? If you are travelling to another country on a holiday, focus on particular words and vocabulary that will help you, for example asking for a coffee, and not on the grammar structure, or even complicated words. If you need it for a job, ie to speak with tourists, then do the same as a above, learn a script and also speak with someone who is more fluent, you will discover that tourists ask roughly the same kind of things, and listening for key words and having a set answer will start you off in picking it up. Fluent linguistic skills come through cultural immersion, and you will pick up local dialects and slang too. Don't get bogged down on the intricate details of language, but begin with simply vocab and phrases, use it often, buy a dictionary/phrase book, possibly also a CD to hear the language spoken Hope this helps Good luck Luke
