This is the flag that was in use in Canada prior to the Maple Leaf Flag - notice the shield is different from what is posted above.

It looked like this before 1965.

It was the Union Jack
The first Canadian flag was the Flag of the Governor General of Canada, a Royal Union Flag with a shield in the centre bearing the quartered arms of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves.
