If the barbaric stories give you nightmares and make you sick, why would you want to teach it to your kids? Am I missing something?
-
If you feel that way about the bible there is no reason why you should want to teach your children about it. Why would you?

That's frightening... To answer your question: there are many fun Bible books you can get for children... ...but may I ask you, why would you practise Christianity when it gives you nightmares?

Do what everyone else does. Ignore the parts you don't agree with.

TJ: Assuming this question and your comments are legitimate, it seems that your sensitivity to violence may be an emotional response out of proportion to the events at hand. Certainly, tales from the Old Testament are thousands of years old and those people have long gone to their final reward. They are at peace. If, as you indicate, the typical events of everyday life are becoming overwhelming, how would you advise someone to respond? There are resources available in every neighborhood. Try telling others about your concerns and fears and get their ideas on how to proceed. Life is complicated and everyone eventually needs to take a break and re-examine how things are going.

Emphasize the meaning behind the stories since that is what they were written for anyway. Spare the kids the gory details until they're old enough to understand. I'm wondering if you're reading the stories through to the end? When they begin with man's attrocities they usually emphasize God's love and compassion at the end, I thought that was the importance of those stories.

i'm curious how your faith developed without reading the fundamental text of your religion. i would suggest taking your kids to sunday school at your church (you do attend a church right?) there are plenty of bible stories that are taught to every child ie jonah and the whale etc. as far as barbarism goes, do you think that modern society is any less violent or barbaric..even by biblical standards?
