Question

Help answer this question below.

I see a lot of questions where college students want answers to test. Is it me or does anyone see a problem with that? They will soon graduate and be in the work force.

    For me it really depends.

Some students are asking questions AFTER they've already had the test to see what they did wrong on the test. I would prefer they used their textbooks (as I do), but I'm just pointing out that some of these student's aren't *necessarily* cheating.

Some of them just want to see how something is done, or need a nudge in the right direction.

The problem is that many of them are actually just cheating on homework.

So I generally take a look at how they are responding to the answers they are given to determine if they want help or just answers.

Nah. No one has to answer. Sometimes good people get in a fix and need help. I never scold them -- what's the point of behaving like a mean step-parent -- and I help when I can.

I'm in college and you should see the sheer amount of cheating that goes on. Students sending each other text messages, writing answers on the inside of their collars or on their shoes, one even wrote something on the inside of the wrapping around a plastic water bottle and then put it back. I've heard of stories of students who stretch out a rubber band, write an equation on it, then put it around their wrist like a bracelet. The answer looks like a small black line until they stretch it out again when the teacher's back is turned.

It disgusts me when we're in the middle of a test and everyone seems to be whispering to one another, leaning into their backpacks to sneak a peek at their text books, and all else. I fear for the future.

These students aren't necessarily cheating. Maybe they already took the test and want to check their answers, or they need help finding information for research projects. When you think about it, there's really no such thing as finding information all on your own--even if you consulted a library book, you still received help from another source other than your brain.

Giving these people help won't necessarily handicap them for the workforce. Study skills and work skills are really two different things entirely. As a person who has been to college and to work, I rarely ever applied any of the research skills learned in college to the tasks I had to complete at work. Unless you are attending community college, most schools provide little vocational training. Most of us don't have to take tests or write research papers for our jobs (unless we're professors or scientists, of course).

    Samuel Johnson said:
"Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves,
or we know where we can find information upon it."

    Woodrow Wilson said:
"I not only use all the brains that I have, but all that I can borrow."

These people are only doing what we are all doing here - asking questions - when, to be honest, there are very few questions asked here which we could not find out by other means. How many of us are in the workforce?

    Samuel Johnson also said:
"A cucumber should be well-sliced, dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out."

Yup. A cheater will always be caught in the real world. A doctored resume is pretty clear, unfortunately, though, it is after the hire sometimes. Then, it becomes a problem if it's hard to prove that they lied about experience or qualification. But, the first round of layoff's... and guess whose ticket is on the top of the stack?

If not here, then someplace else on the www.
It always surprises me they do not go to Wikapedia first.
They say that what you are supposed to learn in school is how to learn.... I guess the playing field is getting pretty level... perhaps even starting to slope the other way
