Both insecurities work in their favor. They're popularly viewed as fiscally prudent AND harder on issues of conducting a war. Neither of these views are supported by evidence BUT when things go from bad to worse, and they inevitably will because of how they set the stage with their conduct on both the fiscal and warfare ends...THEN they can blame the Democrats for incompetence and take everything over again.
