Take a day off when it's someone's birthday? Explain that you are really busy -very sorry! Nope, from a fellow hater of these things, I'm afraid a fake smile is the only way to go. Or hide in the bathroom!

It's very important to get along with co-workers even important to have good relationships with them. It helps build morale, collaboration and even sparks creativity. If the company's culture is as you stated above and if you are one of those people who hate these type of things find a job where you don't work in an office. As a general rule, the better you are at building relationships the further you will go in business, but your feelings have to be genuine. Good Luck!

Hi, What is wrong with celebrating? A little distraction from the 9 to 5? How many parties are there a month or week? And you just click delete, on those emails you don't want to read. I don't know what you do, but if you are a Manager, why don't you discuss with the other managers of where you work to try to tone it down, if you really don't like it. If you are below managers, then you are probably out of luck. The Managers approve of these things, generally, right?

If you're not worried about being bitchy, reply and request to be removed from their "forward" list, or from their joke email list, etc. I have done this many times with positive results, but it does end up alienating the person. If you are interested in preserving a friendship or professional relationship, you might have that conversation in person so you can convey that you're not trying to be rude, just prefer not to receive the invites/notices.
