  • The three men do *not* have $27 invested in the room. They have $25 invested in the room, and $2 invested in an involuntary tip kept by the desk clerk. When you say, "$27 in the room & $2 in his pocket," you are counting the $2 in his pocket *twice* and ignoring the change. Here's what really happened: Each man initially paid $10. When the desk clerk returned $1 to each of them, each man had now paid $9: $8.333... for the room, and $0.666... to the desk clerk. $9 x 3 = $27, plus the $1 x 3 = $3 they got back = $30, all accounted for. The trick is in the way the problem is presented. There's a lie embedded in there. :)
