Yes we called it a Coal Skuttle and i was the one who had to fill the bloody thing:)
My Grandfather had a big basement Coal fired Boiler on his farm , it also took wood .

Yes I do. My grandfather managed the Sumner Coal works in Christchurch, NZ for many years and he and lived in the house right next door to it, so I remember the smell and the mountains of coal from our visits down there when we were children. Appropriately they also had a cat called Smokey who was jet black.
we had a coal bin in our house when i was a little kid. then my dad switched to a heating oil furnace.
Our house was built in the 30s and had a kerosene space heater we had to bring a 5 gallon can up to fill, plus a fireplace. But My Grandmother's big house in the front of the lot, and my two aunt's houses on either side all had coal bins.
