  • Hm. No one asked the Indians. You all just started calling them Native Americans. I know not all Indians object or even care, but the Kootenai tribe, the Navajos, and the Cherokee prefer American Indian. I know because my great grandmother was a full blood Navajo and I'm also part Cherokee and used to live in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where the Cherokee capitol is. I also have some Kootenai friends. We don't want to be called American, unless it is an adjective, and "Native" makes us sound like some creepy white fantasy of the perfect nature person. We've been Indians for over 500 years. We good with it.
