  • You are in the UK. First thing your child needs is a statement of special needs, you wont really get any help without one. That lists what the education authority has to provide under law to give your child equal and fair access to his education. Part of that provision could be one-to-one teaching or in small groups, and it could involve physiotherapy, lots of time outs, etc, stuff that its hard to do in a mainstream school. Then you get to name a school that you think will provide all this. If you have found the perfect boarding school then you can ask for it to go on the statement and then the LEA have to pay up. A real reason for boarding school is 'continuity of care' - ie the same people teaching him at school and at 'home' so he gets the same rules over and over. You NEED a copy of the SEN Code Of Practice. At the back is a long list of organisations that can help you and wont 'act dumb' - IPSEA is a really good one to ask for help. Your LEA will also have something like Parent Link to help people deal with special needs and schools, its independent and can help by being with you at school meetings etc. Ask school for a copy of the SEN Code of Practice or to tell you how you can get one. - ask the Head or the SENCo. If you don't know who the SENCo is then the school could be in a bit of trouble -they are supposed to tell you what level of special needs your child is at, and (by memory) involve you in helping to write his individual learning plan every six months. The SENCo should be your first point of contact for 'explaining' your child to teachers who don't understand him. GOOD LUCK!
